Dim Sum – A New Dining Experience!

Laurie and I have partaken of many different cuisines…to include Greek, North African, Vietnamese, Brazilian, Cuban, Moldovan, Polish, Mediterranean, Italian, Spanish, French, Thai, Indian, Ethiopian, Argentinean, Japanese, Hawaiian, German, Irish, Scottish, Russian, etc., as well as Chinese.  However, we’d never experienced Dim Sum until just recently.
Friends and neighbors, Gary and Paula, called and invited us to join them at a local Knoxville restaurant to sample their Dim Sum offerings.  By way of definition, Dim Sum refers to a style of Chinese food prepared as small bite-sized or individual portions of food traditionally served in small steamer baskets or on small plates.
Dim Sum is also well known for the way it’s served in some restaurants.  Fully cooked and ready-to-serve Dim Sum dishes are loaded on carts and rolled around the restaurant so customers can see the offerings and then choose their orders while seated at their table.

This is the Little Szechuan Chinese and Dim Sum Restaurant in Knoxville Tennessee.  It’s not too impressive from the outside, but with restaurants as with people, you have to sample what is offered inside…

FYI…Little Szechuan Restaurant has a regular menu in addition to serving Dim Sum.  There are a plethora of luncheon specials during the week and there is an extensive dinner menu as well… But we came for the Dim Sum experience!

The Little Szechuan Restaurant is quite large…with plenty of room between tables for the Dim Sum carts to pass.  The interior isn’t fancy and the Chinese decorations and accent pieces were minimal.  The restaurant was quite clean and the service was efficient and friendly.

This is a photo of Paula, our Dim Sum guide, and her husband Gary.  Fortunately for us, Paula knew what the offerings were and she made most of the selections.  If it had been up to Laurie and I, we’d probably still be sitting there trying to decide what to order next…

We started with this grouping of Dim Sum.  From left to right: Sticky Rice in Lotus Leaf; Shumai (pork and shrimp); Stewed Spare Ribs with Salted Black Beans, and; Shrimp Spinach Dumplings.  Laurie and I liked them all, with Laurie being particularly fond of the Sticky Rice and I favored the Shrimp Spinach Dumplings.  The servers brought Chile Oil and Chile Paste so we could amp up the ‘heat’ should we so desire.

This is one of the rolling carts that was being moved from table to table.  We tried 3 of the items shown on  this cart.  The green vegetable in the center right is Gai Lan (Chinese Broccoli).  We really liked this vegetable!  It was served with Oyster Sauce.  We also tried the first 2 items at the front of the cart…the BBQ Pork and the Salt and Pepper Shrimp.  Once again we were reminded that Chinese BBQ Pork is overcooked and dry for American tastes.  The Salt and Pepper Shrimp are visually appealing and they had a nice flavor, but they were in their shells and were a little hard to eat.

Paula, our Dim Sum guide, told me that the other item in the center row on the cart is Roasted Duck.  The two items in the third row are Squid and Sliced Pig Ears.  Unfortunately, our photo of the Stewed Chicken Feet on another cart was too blurry to publish.

Here are two more Dim Sum offerings that we tried.  From left to right we have Taro Turnovers and Fried Meat Dumplings.  The Taro Turnovers were just OK…definitely an acquired taste…but the Fried Meat Dumplings were very good!

The selection of Dim Sum offerings came in 3 sizes…and at 3 different price points.  There are Small Size at $2.50, Medium Size at $2.85 and Large Size at $3.75.  In addition there are other quasi Dim Sum offerings such as the Chinese Broccoli, the Salt and Pepper Shrimp and the BBQ Pork that are brought out on large plates.  Since we split the bill between us, I’m not sure what the charge was for some of the latter items.  Note: Our share of the cost for this feast of flavor was only $32.18 before adding the tip!

These exotic looking and delicious creations are Fried Shrimp Balls.  They were excellent!

So what items are on the Dim Sum menu that we didn’t have a chance to try…or didn’t have the nerve to try?  The Stewed Chicken Feet was one for sure… Other Small Size Plates we didn’t sample included the Lotus Paste Sesame Seed Balls, the Bean Curd Skin with Pork, the Pan Fried Turnip Cake or the Beef Tripe with Green Onion Ginger.

This creation may not look too appetizing but this Rice Noodle Roll with Shrimp was very tasty indeed!

Among the medium size Dim Sum that we didn’t have a chance to try, there was the Shrimp Dumplings, the Garlic Chives Pan Cake, the Fried Garlic Shrimp Rolls and the Rice Noodle Rolls with Beef or Pork.

These little winners are Roast Pork Biscuits… They were very satisfying!

We only skipped 3 of the large size Dim Sum as shown on the printed menu.  These were the Rice Rolls with Fried Twist Cruller, the Dumplings with Shrimp and Chives and the Bean Curd Shrimp Roll.

For something sweet, we tried these Pineapple Custard Pastry Buns.  They were very nice, subtly sweet but not overwhelming.  Other Dim Sum sweet choices included the Steamed Custard Bun, the Sponge Custard Cake, the Baked Egg Custard Tart, the Mango Pudding, Coconut Pudding and the Thai Pudding.

To learn more about Dim Sum and the types of dishes that are included in this food genre, just go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dim_sum.
Many thanks to Paula and Gary for our introduction to Dim Sum!  We enjoyed it very much…lots of different tastes and food experiences... Laurie and I will definitely return to Little Szechuan Chinese and Dim Sum Restaurant.  We’ll bring friends for the Dim Sum and we’ll also want to try out the full Chinese Dinner Menu.  For one thing, it offers 4 different lamb dishes, something that Laurie and I miss and crave since leaving Chicago for East Tennessee.

Southeastern U.S. Pizza & Pasta Restaurants

Laurie and I were out and about one day and we decided to go to a matinee.  It was The Hunger Games…and following the movie, we decided that we were indeed hungry, so we consulted our Lifestyle Coupon Book in order to find a place for an early dinner.

We discovered that we were fairly close to a restaurant named Brixx Wood Fired Pizza.  There are 2 of these restaurants in the Knoxville area and they are part of a chain consisting of 21 locations that is based in Charlotte North Carolina, with stores in that state plus South Carolina, Virginia and of course, Tennessee.

The interior of Brixx is very casual…very basic.  Service was friendly and informal.  This Brixx Wood Fired Pizza restaurant is located at 7403 Kingston Pike in Knoxville.  Phone: 865-474-9971.

Each Brixx location has its own listing of 24 different beers on tap.  While the two Knoxville locations have very similar lists…probably so customers in the area know what to expect, they do have an interesting variety.  Choices include basics like Guinness Stout, Sam Adams Seasonal and Yuengling Lager as well as some more unusual beers such as Blue Moon Belgian White, Duck Rabbit Milk Stout and Brooklyn Brown Ale.  They also offer 15 different wines and a full bar if you’re so inclined.

We both went with a pasta dish for our early dinner.  Laurie chose the Pasta Pomodoro with Shrimp. ($10.95) You could also have it straight up…no meat or shrimp…for $8.95 or with Chicken for $9.95.  Laurie really enjoyed her dinner!

I ordered the Sausage and Proscuitto Pasta. ($10.95) This was described as spicy Italian sausage and proscuitto with pomodoro sauce tossed with penne pasta and topped with gorgonzola cheese and fresh oregano.  Both of our meals were accompanied by a nice size piece of focaccia bread.  I wasn’t too crazy about my entrĂ©e as there were just too many onions in the Pomodoro sauce for my taste.  The pieces of Italian Sausage were quite good though…

My food likes and dislikes are weird…as I don’t like several items that most people consider basics.  With onions, it’s the texture and if they’re really reduced or cooked down, I don’t mind them at all.  As per my better half, the Pomodoro sauce was just fine…

So then…it was a couple of months later…another movie and another early dinner.  This time, the movie was in Knoxville’s Turkey Creek shopping area and there was a Brixx just across the parking lot. (We also had another coupon!)

This Brixx Woodfired Pizza restaurant is located at 10978 Parkside Drive in Knoxville.  Phone: 865-288-4186.

The atmosphere was just like at the first location we visited…very casual.  Our waiter was very nice and service was just fine.

A bit about the menu at Brixx Woodfired Pizza… They do offer Wood Fired Pizza that is cooked in a Brick Oven.  As you’ve already observed, pasta is also on the menu.  In addition, the menu lists a number of appetizers or starters, salads, sandwiches and wraps plus desserts and treats.

This time I decided to try their Roasted Chicken Club Sandwich. ($8.45) This sandwich consists of chilled shaved roasted chicken with apple-wood smoked bacon, tomato, melted fontina cheese, arugula and aioli on toasted focaccia.  I chose the fruit as my side although I could have had potato chips, bean salad or potato salad instead.  I added a little Tabasco and I really enjoyed this sandwich.  The focaccia bread really made the difference…

Laurie loves pizza!   Coming from Chicago, finding good pizza here in East Tennessee has been a bit of a challenge… (Big Ed’s in Oak Ridge is the best we’ve had in the area to date)

However, Laurie really did like this “4 X 4” Pizza. ($10.95)   It had a nice thin crispy crust and was layered with mozzarella, parmesan, gouda and goat cheese as well as sausage, pepperoni, prosciutto and bacon.  I was a little surprised that she ordered this ‘meat lovers’ type pizza as it’s more my style.  She did give me a piece of it and it was pretty darn good!  The only negative to me was the fact that the pizza guy didn’t really spread the meat out very evenly…
We will return to Brixx Wood Fired Pizza restaurants.  Not only do we still have 2 more coupons…but we do like this casual place with reasonably priced food.  For more information on Brixx Wood Fired Pizza locations and their menus, just go to www.brixxpizza.com.

New Bridge Over the Tennessee River (#1)

A very large and significant highway project has just started up in East Tennessee. It’s located just southwest of Knoxville at Lenoir City.  US Highway 321 crosses I-75 at Exit 81.  If you take US 321 east toward the Smoky Mountain National Park, you will find yourself on a 4-lane highway passing through the newer commercial portion of Lenoir City.  After about a mile and a half you encounter a light where the highway turns into a 2-lane road.
This stretch of 2-lane highway is about a mile long…and it crosses the Tennessee River on a bridge that is raised up directly over the top of the Fort Loudoun Dam.  The dam is part of the TVA system, generating power and with its adjoining lock for shipping, it represents the upper end of the navigable portion of the river.
US 321 is the most direct route from west to east to the Smoky Mountain National Park as well as to Maryville and Townsend Tennessee…

The state of Tennessee recently awarded a $69,361,720.70 million contract to a Sevierville Tennessee contractor to build a new, 4-lane bridge over the Tennessee River at Lenoir City.  The contractor will also widen the existing 2-lane highway. (I wonder what the 70 cents is for…)

The view above shows the start of construction as viewed looking west toward Lenoir City.  Part of the waterway is just below the equipment shown in the photo.

This view is from the TVA park area on the west side of the connecting channel between Tellico Lake and Fort Loudoun Lake.  Tellico Lake was formed by daming up the Little Tennessee River and it has a separate dam.  However, the Tellico Dam is basically a water control structure only…with the Fort Loudoun Dam doing most of the work.

The bridge shown in this photo is a 2-lane structure that will remain in place.  A second 2-lane bridge will be built over this channel right along side of the existing one.

They have also started some preparatory work in the median adjacent to US 321 where it intersects with County Road 444.  In the distance, you can see the bridge over the Fort Loudoun Dam that will be completely replaced.  If you turned around and looked back, you would see the same scene as shown in the previous photo of the channel between the 2 lakes.

You might ask the question… When will this project be completed?  The answer is that it’s supposed to be completed on May 31, 2015!  With no completion date penalties built into the project, I’m not taking any bets on the target date…  The good news is that this infrastructure project will employ many local workers for about 3 years.

About 10 days ago, this was a heavily forested area…with a meadow toward the right rear of the photo.  The woods were overloaded with deer and by now they’re searching for a new home… Most of the logs were loaded on trucks and taken away but they did create quite a stack of sawdust from the remnants.

The Tennessee River itself is straight ahead, right between those trees on the other side of the meadow and those power lines on the other side.  If one was to drive down that road shown in the middle right portion of the photo, you’d end up at the foot of the dam right on the river.  Quite a few fishermen drop a line from the concrete walkway along the channel below the dam.
In addition to the 4-lane bridge over the Tennessee River and the new 2-lane bridge over the channel between the two lakes, the contractor will have to build a 4-lane bridge over the railroad tracks on the Lenoir City side of the river.  One of the major challenges for the contractor will be building the bridges without stopping the flow of rail traffic plus barge and leisure craft traffic, not to mention the 21,000 + vehicles that cross the existing bridge every day.
Other updates will follow… Just click on any of the photos to enlarge them.

A Little Mexican Cuisine…

A couple of our friends had recommended a local Mexican Restaurant that we'd never been to, telling us that they thought that it was the best of its type in the area.  While I’m not a huge fan of Mexican cuisine, Laurie likes it quite a bit and we decided that we’d compare it to our area favorite, Ayala’s.  For our feedback on Ayala’s in Lenoir City Tennessee, check out my blog from back in April at http://bigdaddydavesbitsandpieces.blogspot.com/2012/04/mexican-cuisine-lenoir-city-tennessee.html.

This is Cinco Amigos Mexican Restaurant.  It’s located in Lenoir City just off of I-75 at the exit for US Highway 321.  One of the reasons that we'd never been here before is that this restaurant is a little hard to spot from the highway.  It’s tucked in behind a gas station and it’s located in a motel right next to the Holiday Inn Express.  Visually, from the road, it’s right next to the Waffle House.

Don’t let this empty parking lot throw you off… This is reserved Waffle House parking… The entrance to Cinco Amigos is on the reverse side of the building.  Note: Outdoor patio dining is available.

The interior of the restaurant was clean, colorful and bright.  There is a full bar, so Laurie had a nice Margarita, ($4.75), and I had a domestic beer. ($3.75)

As is the norm in the typical Mexican restaurant, our server brought us a basket of chips and some salsa for dipping.  The chips were nice and warm while the salsa provided just the right amount of heat.

One of our bad habits is that when we try a new restaurant, we...or perhaps its just myself...like to sample more food than we would normally eat!  What the heck, we have to determine if it’s any good…

So our first appetizer was one of our Mexican restaurant favorites…Queso Fundido with Grilled Chorizo and flour tortillas. ($5.99) There was plenty of cheese and chorizo…outlasting the flour tortillas.  The rest of the mixture worked well with the tortilla chips!  This appetizer was just right for us…spicy enough, not too runny for the flour tortillas and thick enough to stick to the tortilla chips.

This is a small order of Jalapenos Loco. ($5.99 small order/$8.99 for a large order with 5 pieces) These jalapenos were stuffed with cream cheese and wrapped in bacon.  They were a bit spicy for Laurie…but not overwhelming for myself.  Very nice!!

Other appetizers that are a bit out of the ordinary included Tequila Lime Chicken Wings (12/$7.99); Cinco Fries/waffle fries topped with Chorizo and cheese ($7.49), and; a Tijuana Style Hot Dog ($8.99).  I’m not sure why the hot dog is listed under appetizers as it consists of a jumbo hot dog wrapped in bacon with sauteed onions, tomatoes and jalapenos with a side of either beans or waffle fries.

For her entrĂ©e, Laurie ordered the Tacos De Carne. ($8.99) This included 2 flour tortillas stuffed with sliced steak and served with Pico de Gallo, lettuce, guacamole, sour cream, rice and beans.  She really enjoyed her dinner!  We ordered so much food that she took half of her dinner home...

As in most Mexican restaurants, the menu at Cinco Amigos is very extensive.  There are 13 A La Carte Items; 9 Chicken entrees; 4 Vegetarian selections; 4 Seafood entrees; 15 Combo dishes, (mixing tacos, enchiladas, chile rellenos, burritos, tamales, quesadillas, chalupas and tostadas), and; 27 specials!
The most expensive entrĂ©e on the menu was the Steak Con Camarones…a 12 oz. t-bone steak with 6 grilled shrimp, rice, beans, salad and tortillas. ($14.99)

My entrĂ©e was the Chile Colorado. ($9.25) This consisted of “beef chunks in red chili sauce with rice, beans and flour tortillas".  While I wouldn’t describe the beef as being in ‘chunks’…it was really in strips…it was still very good.  The chili sauce was just right and I had the right number of tortillas to match up with my entrĂ©e.

Our server was nice and he checked in on us regularly to ensure that everything was OK or if we needed anything.  We both liked Cinco Amigos…and we will return!  It’s at least equal to Ayala’s, which is just ½ mile west on US 321.  Time for a group dining ‘taste off’!!
Cinco Amigos Mexican Restaurant is located at 1110 Highway 321 North in Lenoir City Tennessee.  Phone: 865-986-6699.  Website:  http://mexicanrestaurantlenoircitytn.com/cinco-amigos-menu.htm.

Jimmy Buffet/Caribbean Wine Tasting Party

Well, it’s that time again!  Another wine tasting party… These gatherings of our friends and neighbors are always fun.  Given the theme of this month’s party, plus its location…on Bev and Larry’s party dock…this promised to be a nice twist on one of our favorite group activities!

How about a little mango salsa ala Bev!  This went very nicely with the grilled jerked chicken.  I’m not much of a salsa guy, but I liked this one!

I guess I should lay out the schedule of events for one of our wine tasting parties.  Similar groups are quite formal in their approach to their wine tastings …with a few hors d'oeuvres wine evaluation check list, etc…but not this group!
We start with a few drinks…in this case Larry's Margarita’s, Bev's sangria, scotch (for me) and some ‘house/host’ bottles of wine.  Then we go directly into the food part of the evening.  So, that’s where I’m starting this blog…with the food!

Laurie and I decided that since we’re not really into cooking Caribbean cuisine, we’d go to the local pro in the area for assistance.  So it was off to Captain Ernie’s Caribbean Restaurant in Lenoir City Tennessee.

This is jasmine rice and black beans from Captain Ernie’s.  They were winners for sure!  When we picked up our order from the restaurant, they ensured that everything would stay hot until our group was ready to eat.  Our order was packed in a big Rubbermaid “Hot Box”.

Laurie and I also ordered this nice cornbread and these sweet fried plantains.  With 1 member of our group out of town on a business trip and 2 couples gone on vacation, there were only 13 of us to party on the dock...plus, L & B'sfriend Joe & Bev's sister Pat.  Even so, all but one of the sweet plantains and 1 ½ pieces of the cornbread were gone by the time we finished eating.  Thank you Captain and Mrs. Ernie!

If I remember correctly, this nice mixed salad was from Jenny and Fred and Karen brought her husband Charlie's favorite ambrosia salad.  Both were a hit!

This photo gives you an idea of the setting for our wine tasting party… Not too shabby…the only home and dock in this secluded cove!  Facing the camera, Laurie photographed Martha, Karen and Martha’s husband, Irv.  Love the Flamingos and note the Red, White and Blue Flag just above Irv…USA all the way!

Here’s a bit more of the party dock…with Irv, Fred, Joel and yours truly in the background.  The dock is equipped with running water, a fridge, lights, fans and lots of electrical outlets for blenders, crock pots, etc.  Larry has a couple of nice big grills just off the dock on the shore.  Larry's buddy Joe had set up a new sound system that was playing Jimmy Buffet and related music in the background.

Here’s Bev, our hostess, with Joel, Fred and myself…

Oh yes...the actual wine tasting!  It actually happened...long after dinner.  Every couple brought a bottle of wine... They were either white or a blush, given the theme of the party.  Since there aren't 'too many' actual Caribbean wines, we 'tasted' a variety of wines from the USA, Chile, Italy and Australia.

I think that Irv looks pretty relaxed…don’t you?!  He’s of Puerto Rican heritage, (former US Coast Guard & still has his hand in training)…and all of the ladies love to have him read any Wine Labels out loud in Spanish…even if it’s not a Spanish wine! They say it just sounds so much better when he reads it... (If only I’d really learned and remembered that French I took in High School...)

This is Bev’s sister Pat…with me in my Hawaiian/Caribbean shirt.  Larry had asked all of the guys to wear something “Caribbean” and this was as close as I could get… I am kinda built like those big Hawaiian guys...

In this photo…left to right…we have Jenny, Holly, Martha and Karen…with Pat’s dog Willie in the foreground.  Bev and Larry’s dogs, Sweetie and Coco also attended the party.  Any food dropped on the deck was quickly cleaned up!

We missed photographing two terrific contributions to our food largesse!  Holly brought a bowl of Caribbean Holiday Shimp http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Caribbean-Holiday-Shrimp/
that were just great…and gone before the camera was put in action.  Martha brought not one, but two of her homemade Key Lime Pies!  Everyone thought that her pies were, to use today’s parlance, ‘the bomb’.  They were great...but by then we were all to mellow to remember to take a photo!

Our host and hostess provided jerked chicken, both mild and spicy versions, as the entrĂ©e item on our menu.  Larry marinated and grilled enough chicken so that everyone could have at least 2 pieces.  It was all consumed!  Karen, who admittedly isn’t crazy about chicken, ate her share and then she told Larry that it was the best chicken she’d ever had!

And here he is…Larry, our host, grillmaster, BBQ expert and master gardener!  Of course, I went for his spicy jerked chicken…and it was terrific!  The marinade was killer good…

FYI…Larry is also a ‘master blogger’…and you can view his blogs about food, gardening, travel experiences and family fun at http://bigdudesramblings.blogspot.com/.

One more look at the food…even the plates were festive.  Laurie missed the sweet plantains on her first trip to the buffet…but she made up for it later. Viewing this again, I'm hungry and I do believe that it’s time for dinner!

We missed photographing our buddy Joe…who had helped Larry and Bev with the dockside logistics.  In addition, I failed in my only and very simple duty… I forgot to take a picture of Laurie…whereas she took all of these pictures!
For those who might be interested, Captain Ernie’s Caribbean Restaurant is located at 501 North Highway 321N in Lenoir City, Tennessee.  Phone: 865-308-2000.  Captain Ernie spent many years running a fishing boat out of Key West Florida.  To view a sample menu, you can go to http://www.easttennesseedining.com/cptnernies.html and scroll on down the page that pops up.
Just click on any photo to enlarge it…get a close up of that jerked chicken!

Genghis Did Not Conquer!

Laurie and I like to seek out restaurants that we haven’t experienced before.  So we had some errands to run and we thought we’d tie them in with a movie and dinner.  I figured that my choice for our meal was safe as they’d been in business at this location for more than a year…and besides, I had a ‘buy one, get one’ dining coupon!

This Genghis Mongolian BBQ Grill in Knoxville Tennessee is part of a chain based in Dallas Texas.  As per the company website, these restaurants offer fast casual Asian stir fry foods in ‘an atmosphere that is colorful, lively and a lot of fun!’

Actually, we thought that the ambiance was plain…a bit industrial…and sort of beat up looking for having only been in business for a bit more than a year.  Fun…not so much!  This view is looking towards the ‘buffet’ line where you build your bowl of ingredients for your personal stir fry.

This is the grill area at Genghis.  You give your bowl of ingredients to the ‘grill master’ and he or she creates your stir fry meal on a giant grill…keeping the orders separate during the cooking process through the use of very large scissor like dividers.

There are certainly lots of ingredients to choose from.  You take your small silver bowl down the line and you choose whatever mix of ingredients you’d like.  Some guests just load up on meats and/or seafood.  Veggie lovers can stack up their favorites as well.  To provide an example of the wide variety of available items, here is a list of the meats…or proteins you can choose from: calamari, chicken, ham, Khans Krab, marinated fish, marinated steak, pepperoni, pork, sausage, scallops, shrimp, sliced beef and turkey.
From the Proteins, you move along to the Seasonings (12 choices); the Vegetables (roughly 30 items), and; Sauces (14 options ranging from tomato to honey soy)

Now about our meal… There were 4 ‘special’ summer appetizers offered.  You just order these directly through your server.  The choices included: Garlic Citrus Endamne; Lettuce Chicken Wraps; Summer Chicken Rolls with Peanut Sauce and; Chicken Potstickers.  As you can see, we ordered the Chicken Rolls.  We were thankful for the peanut sauce as these ‘rolls’ were gummy and the ingredients were tasteless.  The big plus was that they were inexpensive!

We forgot to take photos of our ‘stir fry’ entrees until after we’d eaten a good part of the food.  This was mine.  No flavor!  Had to add a hot sauce and some soy sauce to give it any ‘pop’ at all.

Have I talked about our server yet?  Well, what can I say!  He was poorly trained.   His approach to both the food selection process, customer satisfaction and service was one of ignorance.  He was good spirited but fairly useless…
OK…its time for some positives.  The Genghis Grill website provides a calorie/nutrition calculator.  You can actually figure out the fat, saturated fat, sodium, etc. for your projected meal before you go to the restaurant. (Note: I ran the numbers on my meal when I got home. (The calories came in at 833, but the sodium came in at 2,201!) They may be trying to mimic Subway’s healthy food sales pitch with their Genghis Health Kwest.  Controlling what you select from the grill and eating in moderation would indeed help people lose weight.

This was what was left of Laurie’s dinner when we remembered to take a photo.  She ‘hated’ her dinner…and as she told the Manager, when he asked if we enjoyed our meal, she ate it only because she hadn’t eaten all day and she was very hungry! Plus, she would never be back!   She had to add soy sauce to make this offering even eatable.

Genghis does offer a series of 10 pre-designed meals for diners like Laurie who are unsure what to chose from the line…in her case, she didn’t want to choose items that wouldn’t work together.  So she decided to go with pre-set offering of #1.  Guess what?!  There were no ‘menu cards’ for offering #1.  They’d ‘run out of them’.  Our server’s advice was just take a little of this and a little of that and it would work out.  He didn’t have a clue and he didn’t really seem to care or think it mattered.
Genghis likes to use the term ‘Khanquered’ when referring to winning over new customers and/or a new market area.   We definitely weren’t conquered nor were we ‘Khanquered’!!

One other positive…Genghis has a full bar.

So…if all Genghis Mongolian Grills were this bad, how has the chain grown to the point where they have locations in 21 states?  AHA!  There is the question.! I checked Trip Advisor…all Genghis reviews.  The worst average score I could find was for 3 other locations…with 3 ‘stars’ or an average rating. Our location hadn’t been rated on Trip Advisor.  I checked 2 other rating sites for the Knoxville location.  About half of the reviews, 9 out of 20, rated this location as poor or not acceptable.  Service was badly hammered and cleanliness/food safety were major concerns.
FYI…By way of comparison, the Chattanooga location was ranked #36 out of 544 restaurants in that area.  Trip Advisor ratings for that location included 29 reviews, 25 of which were excellent or very good.  Given all of this rating information and combining it with our experience, I can only come to one conclusion.  Poor Management!  Oh, did we mention that the Manager didn’t ask us what was wrong or what could they have done to make our experience better?  He did say he was sorry we weren’t happy…
Should anyone be curious or brave, the Knoxville Genghis Grill is located at 11316 Parkside Drive in the Turkey Creek Shopping area.  Phone: 865-931-7208.  The company website is http://www.genghisgrill.com/.
