Lunch Break in West Haven Connecticut

Continuing on our 4th day of our extended road trip, traffic on I-95 near New Haven was pretty bad.  When Laurie spotted a sign along the highway for a local diner, she suggested that we should take a break and have some lunch… Seemed like a good idea!

We finally arrived at Georgie’s Diner.  It wasn’t ‘exactly’ right off the highway nor was it right on the road that we exited onto… But we persisted mostly because we love diners!

Here it is…Georgie’s Diner!  It has that classic diner ‘look’.  This structure was built in New Rochelle New York in 1956.  From there it was moved to Stratford Connecticut.  Finally, in 1967, the diner was moved here to West Haven Connecticut.  George Anthis completely restored this diner in 2009, hence its name!

We were lucky to find a parking place!  This place is popular…and like most diners, it’s not a huge space.  The good news is that we ended up sitting right next to all the action.  Many if not all of the waitresses had been working at Georgie’s for more than a couple of years…and they knew what many of their ‘regulars’ wanted to eat before they sat down.

I saw that they had Split Pea Soup on the menu as the daily soup du jour and I ordered a cup to accompany my lunch.  It was very nice indeed…

After perusing the menu, Laurie decided to go for something that’s hard to find in East Tennessee.  This is Georgie’s Diner’s version of a Philly Steak. ($12.99) The shaved beef sirloin was served on a large roll with cheese, grilled mushrooms and onions.  It normally comes with peppers but Laurie had them leave it off her sandwich.  As you can see, it was a big sandwich and Laurie thought that it was pretty tasty too!

A side came with Laurie’s Philly Steak and she didn’t feel like French fries.  An unusual option on the Georgie’s Diner was tortilla chips and salsa.  Laurie thought that it was a nice change.

For my lunch I ordered the Grilled Reuben. ($12.50) I chose grilled pastrami over the optional corned beef.  The sandwich included sauerkraut and melted Swiss cheese on Georgie’s fresh baked rye bread.  Instead of Russian dressing I asked for spicy mustard.  Grilling both the pastrami and the rye bread really made this sandwich pop!  Happy taste buds resulted…

Georgie’s Diner is open 7 days a week from 7 AM until 9 PM.  It’s located at 427 Elm Street in West Haven Connecticut.  Phone: 203-933-1000.  Website: http://www.georgies-diner.com/.

...and then we were back on I-95 headed for our hotel in Waterford.   Sunday traffic was improved going our way but it was worse headed west toward New York!

Thanks for dropping in for a visit!

Take Care, Big Daddy Dave

  1. Smiles … and while you were looking for flamingos and other decorative things in the restaurant, I was picking off Laurie's and your plates the following: Beef sirloin, cheese, mushrooms, corned beef, onions and for good measure the sauerkraut and spicy mustard. Go keto … smiles. Much love, cat.
