We were
back in Rockland and it was time for dinner.
We wanted to dine somewhere with a view of the harbor, so we chose
Archer’s on the Pier.
This is
the front/street view of Archer’s on the Pier.
This restaurant is owned by Lynn Archer. Reportedly Lynn’s days begin at 3 AM when she
bakes bread and prepares breakfast for local lobstermen before they set their
traps.
For fun
and relaxation, Lynn likes to go riding on her motorcycle. Given the fact that she not only owns Archer’s
on the Pier but the nearby Brass Compass as well, it’s easy to see why she
needs a little open road time!
We’d
already eaten breakfast at The Brass Compass and I’d posted our experience on my
blog site. You can check it out at https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=5617317794624015781#editor/target=post;postID=877682318032539068;onPublishedMenu=allposts;onClosedMenu=allposts;postNum=4;src=postname.
The
dining area and bar at Archer’s is warm and welcoming with lots of wood and
light. It was early but Archer’s was
quite busy.
Like most
restaurants along the water…or for that matter just about anywhere these days…outside
dining is available too. Archer’s deck
area is covered with plastic curtains sheltering guests from the wind and
weather.
While I
do like dining outdoors when viewing the water, a golf course or great scenery,
I just don’t ‘get’ the 'charm' offered by many city based restaurants where you
can watch non-stop traffic or a nice parking lot. Just my opinion…
I did
like the views from Archer’s pier… Note the superstructure of this boat docked
nearby. I love the look of it but I
wonder what this super-high wheelhouse was designed for. Visibility for what reason?
Then I
spotted this big yacht moored in Rockland’s harbor. The Carolina
is a 147.5 foot long vessel. She was
built in the Netherlands in 1997 by Feadship. She was last refitted in 2007. The Carolina can accommodate up to 12 guests
and she has a crew of 10.
We also
had a long distance view of Rockland Harbor’s Breakwater Lighthouse. This historic brick and wood structure at
Jameson Point was completed in 1902. The
lighthouse tower is 25 feet tall. The
lighthouse is open for visitors on summer weekends. Note that it sits at the end of a long breakwater
so the walk out to the lighthouse is the equivalent of more than 15 football
fields.
For more
information about the lighthouse and the breakwater’s history, go to http://rocklandharborlights.org/index.html.
For my
meal I ordered the Salty Dog. ($18.00) This triple decker sandwich included
fresh deep fried haddock with bacon, lettuce, tomato and cheese. For my side I had the coleslaw. It was a very tasty sandwich…but then again 'almost' everything is better with bacon, even fresh fish!
Laurie
returned to her persistent New England dining theme…lobster! This sandwich made Lynn Archer the winner vs.
Bobby Flay in his ‘Bobby Flay Throw-Down’ TV series.
This is
the King of Clubs. ($28.00) This pricey triple decker creation features lots of
Maine lobster, bacon, lettuce and tomato.
It was a good sandwich but this is one instance where Laurie thought
that bacon really didn’t make it better…
In her opinion, she would much prefer a basic straightforward overloaded
lobster roll! But hey, she had to give
it a try!
FYI… Laurie’s
favorite lobster roll ever was an object of wonder and satisfaction and it
occurred early on this trip. To see a
photo and description of it, go to https://bigdaddydavesbitsandpieces.blogspot.com/2018/10/ocean-pizza.html.
Since we
didn’t go for huge entrees, we still had some room for dessert. I had a very nice piece of blueberry pie and
Laurie had a tasty slice of strawberry
rhubarb pie. ($6.00 each) Both were sided with a bit of whipped cream…always a
good thing!
Archer’s
on the Pier is a very nice restaurant in a scenic location with good food and
matching service. Prices are a little
high… Archer’s is located at 58 Ocean Street in Rockland Maine. Phone: 207-594-2435. Archer’s website is found at http://archersonthepier.com/index.html.
Thanks
for stopping by for a visit!

Care, Big Daddy Dave
Blueberry pie and strawberry rhubard pie! Oh, that sounds so good! I don't like fish, in fact I never eat it. We have so much fish here in Sicily but I won't eat it. I like meat and chicken. I just found out about an ancient Sicilian chicken called "collo d'oro", chicken with a golden neck. This is what it is: it's a mixture of local Sicilian chickens and chickens which had "migrated" from Lybia to Sicily in olden times. I was so surprised. Apparently they renowned for the taste and are now having a come back in popularity. That's what the newspaper said anyway. I am going to ask my butcher if he knows about this.
ReplyDeleteI have travelled here and there and everywhere but never to Maine … I hear there is a lot of light houses in Maine … ok, nuff of that, friend David … You comin to do some ice fishing? … c.
ReplyDeleteLighthouses are so awesome and your photo of that one is great! We watched Smithsonian's "Aerial View" TV show on Maine last night, lots of trees, blueberry fields and water! That's some club sandwich, but the haddock looks better to me. Thanks for sharing, Dave!
