More Visitors…aka New Neighbors!

A few years ago, a friend and peer and a retail loss prevention professional visited us here in East Tennessee to check out the possibility of moving here from their home near Charlotte North Carolina after retiring.  Instead, at that moment in time, Bob and Theresa opted to move to a community in South Carolina that was closer to their family.

Recently, they paid us a return visit.  They’d rented a home for a week or so with the objective of spending a little time further evaluating the possibility of moving to our community.  In addition to lifestyle and scenery, taxes in South Carolina had encouraged them to consider a ‘change of venue’.  During the visit, we stopped in to visit Mike and Sherry, our next door neighbors.  That’s where we took this fuzzy photo of Bob and Theresa.  Sorry about the photo…

Laurie and I provided Bob and Theresa with all kinds of local contact information especially focused on services that would be needed if they moved.  More importantly, we decided to take them to one of our favorite joints/diners, Hot Rods 50’s Diner, a restaurant we hadn’t visited since 2019…pre-covid-19.  As you can see, the design and décor evokes the feeling of a 1950s diner…and so does the menu.

The bluish coloration in the photos is the result of all the neon lighting…

Bob ordered the Mushroom and Swiss ‘Steakburger’. (7 oz. $11.99/11 oz. $13.99) His steakburger was topped with a pile of sautéed mushrooms and melted Swiss cheese.  All burgers come with lettuce, tomato, onion and pickles unless otherwise instructed… For Bob’s side, he ordered the sweet potato fries.

Note: All of Hot Rods 50's burgers are made from 100% freshly ground Angus chuck steak)

Laurie went light…at least by Hot Rods 50's standards.  She ordered the Fish and Chips with a side of the hand-cut French fries, coleslaw and tartar sauce. ($9.99) The fish was 6 oz. of beer battered and deep fried Pacific Cod.

Note: Hot Rods 50's Diner offers an amazing 24 side dishes to accompany your entrée!

Theresa decided to order the Buffalo Chicken Hoagie on a toasted hoagie bun. (6” $9.99/12” 12.99) Fried chicken fingers are tossed in your choice of mild, medium, hot or ‘Flame Thrower’ sauce.  Then the sandwich is topped with cheddar cheese, lettuce and tomato and served with a side of ranch dressing.

As for myself, I didn’t have any problem deciding what I wanted for dinner…despite the fact that the menu is 9 pages long!  This is Hot Rods 50's Signature Sandwich…”The Hog”. ($10.99) A slab of breaded pork tenderloin is pan fried and served with lettuce, tomato, pickle chips and onion, accompanied by a side of mayonnaise.  Please give me ‘credit’ for my healthy side dish…steamed broccoli.

It is a good thing that I ordered that steamed broccoli!  Both Bob and I ordered dessert.  This is one of my favorite desserts…the Fried Twinkie Sunday. ($5.99) A Twinkie is dipped in cake batter and then deep fried.  It’s served with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream and then it drizzled with raspberry sauce.  Excellent!

None of us walked away hungry after dinner, that’s for sure!

Hot Rods 50’s Diner is located at 373 Hannum Street in Alcoa Tennessee.  They are open daily from 11 AM until 9 PM.  Phone: 865-984-7171.  Website: http://www.hotrods50sdiner.com/index.html

So the question is…was it Laurie and my magnetic personalities or dinner at Hot Rod 50s?  Well, it might have been our environment and perhaps the cost of living…but in any case, Bob and Theresa found a house that they liked and they snatched it up!  That was no easy trick in a housing market where almost zero homes are for sale and where 285 new homes are under construction.

Here are Bob and Theresa in front of their new home in East Tennessee.  Congratulations ya’ll!  Welcome to the neighborhood!

Just click on any of the photos to enlarge them…

Thanks for stopping by for a visit!

Take Care, Big Daddy Dave

  3. I would have been shocked had you not ordered the usual plate-sized pork sandwich at Hot Rods. Best to get this visiting in b4 the new round of Covid gets much worse. Looks like several states are going for herd immunity from everyone catching it.
