On the second leg of our road trip to visit family in Omaha Nebraska, we left our hotel in Jacksonville Illinois and headed across Missouri on US Hwy 36. I’d done a little research and had decided to do a little exploration of Nodaway County Missouri and its county seat, Maryville.
By the
time we arrived, the lunch hour had passed but we were hungry and, based on the
reviews and the menu, I was focused on a specific restaurant for a late
lunch.
This was our destination, the A and G Restaurant. The Groumoutis family, Tony/Anthony and George opened the restaurant more than 45 years ago and it’s still going strong! Note the patio dining option.
There
were a couple of reasons I was attracted to this restaurant. I was looking for the best place to have
lunch in Maryville and I was looking for a diverse menu. Being ranked #1 in town…4.5 out of 5.0…by
both Google and TripAdvisor reviewers…that was very positive! Then there was the variety on the menu. The lunch menu has a nice mix but the dinner
menu almost overwhelms diners, with over 150 choices.
In many ways, the inside of A and G is reminiscent of a nice supper club in the northern USA. There is a nice flashy and attractive bar and the dining room is full of big cushy booths.
The first thing that diners note is the variety of choices they must consider. For an appetizer, we chose the Shrimp Havarti…large shrimp and Havarti cheese baked and served hot with toasted garlic bread. It was excellent!
We’re
glad we made the choice that we did…but we could have gone completely Greek
with Saganaki or Kalamarakia/Calamari…or stayed strictly basic with fried
pickles or buffalo chicken strips…fried crab cakes, or we could have strayed to
the Southwestern side with Tex-Mex eggrolls or Quesadillas.
For my entrée, I decided to go with The ‘Merican’ Burger…a large peppercorn crusted burger with cheddar cheese, pepper jack cheese, and bacon with ‘Angry Sauce’ as well as lettuce and tomato on the side. It was a very nice burger and the homemade chips were quite good.
I’d
seriously considered the Shaved Prime Rib sandwich and the Country Fried
Steak. Other luncheon options included
Liver and Onions, Spaghetti, Asian Stir Fry, a Twice Baked Potato Plate and
even a Philly Cheesesteak.
Laurie decided to try the Greek Gyro Plate which came with pita bread and rice pilaf. With one exception, we haven’t had a good gyro plate since we left Chicago. Our other previous ‘gyros’ winner only lacked one ingredient in comparison to our Chicago favorites. That missing ingredient was garlic in the tzatziki sauce. Although not a potent as sauces in Chicago, this version did pack a punch. We have a winner!
The
dinner menu just goes on and on… From pizza to hand cut steaks and cedar-planked
salmon to Shrimp Tempura, the menu offers all kinds of options. Other entrees include Lamb Chops, Greek
Mousaka, Chile-Lime Chicken, Shrimp Scampi, Fajitas, New Orleans Pasta, White Truffle
Mac ‘n Cheese…and much more.
We were
very happy with our choice and even though Maryville is a bit out of our way,
we plan to stop here again on another one of our trips to Omaha. The A
and G Restaurant is located at 208 North Main Street in Maryville
Missouri. They are open for lunch and
dinner 7 days a week. Phone:
660-582-4421. Website with Menu: http://www.agrestaurant.com/.
In my
next posting, we’ll be looking around Maryville and learning a bit about the town
as well as Nodaway County Missouri.

Thanks
for stopping by for a visit!

That looked like a really nice meal, David. Giant shrimp and Havarti cheese on crusty bread looks really wonderful as an appetizer. I second Laurie's choice with Greek gyro plate, which is a very popular dish over here. My husband orders it everytime when we visit a Greek restaurant. What is an angry sauce? Must be very spicy?
ReplyDeleteI love homemade chips and yours look perfect. Glad you found a winner.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely love this post, friend David! One of the best, if not THE best so far. Send it to you local paper, and see what happens, regarding publishing. I, for one, would look forward to a weekly travel/ food review by David.
