The First Snowfall of the Season!

Later this week I’ll return to our exploration of the area around Lexington Kentucky but in the meantime, I wanted to footnote our first snowfall of the season...a major event in this part of Tennessee.

Here are two views of Tellico Lake from the back of our home in Loudon Tennessee.  Note how green the grass was as well as how blue the sky was.  These photos were taken on New Year’s Day, January 1, 2022.  On this particular Saturday after Christmas, our official temperature at the Knoxville Airport, was 77F!  It was an all-time record high temperature for the day and it tied the all-time record temperature for the month of January in Knoxville.

Here was a view of the lake from a similar vantage point on the morning of January 3rd!  The green grass was buried and the skies were gray.  The low temperature overnight was 24F and the high was only 35F…with the high a staggering 42 degrees below the high recorded only 2 days earlier.

Here are a couple other views from our back deck.  Given the accumulation of snow on the table and the railing, we’re guessing that we got about 3 + inches of snow…quite a bit when you consider that our yearly average snowfall totals only 4.8 inches.

Of course, with the ground so warm after an unusually warm December, not to mention our super warm New Year’s Day, quite a bit of the snow melted before Laurie and I even woke up.  The roads were already clear as were our walkways.  I had a late morning appointment and by then the roads were mostly dry…although a couple of trees in the area did topple from the weight of the heavy snow.

FYI…snow is a big deal here.  School was cancelled despite most of the roads being clear.  I guess that some back roads in the county were still expected to be hazardous.  We’re certainly and thankfully not in Chicago any more!

It sure is a good thing that I brought a snow shovel with me when we moved down to East Tennessee from the Chicago area!  I brought it out and put it to good use…clearing my way to the bird feeder so I could refill it.  It was an exhausting job as you can well imagine…

Just click on any of the photos to enlarge them.

Thanks for stopping by for a visit!

Take Care, Big Daddy Dave

  4. I would have traded our weekend of dreary dismal rain and fog for some of that pretty white snowfall, Dave.yes, the temps have been quite erratic even here in NH. We have no snow and temps in the 20s today, but they will double by mid-week with some (more) rain. There is a chance of a light snowfall on Friday, 1-3 inches. We left our snow shovels at our former home and thankfully there's no need for one here.

  5. Hi Dave & Laurie, we will be a(nother) road trip in Feb as Patrick/Grenville is going to a ham radio convention in Orlando, FL. Rather then fly there for a few days we're taking an extended road trip to and from FL and thought it might be nice to meet up with any bloggers along the way. We know friends in Powell, TN and so may revisit. If you would be interested in possibly meeting, please contact me at the email on our blog as we're not sure of your location, etc.
