This is
the most expensive post I’ve ever made on my blog site… It’s about home
maintenance, taken to the necessary extreme.
This is
our home on the morning before all the action and improvements took place. The house was built in 1999 and after 21
years things do go wrong and/or just wear out.
Ahhh…the ‘joys’ of home ownership!
The action
began with an ‘apron’ being spread around the front and back of the house, as
well as alongside the garage. The
workers were on the job by 7:30 am.
A
materials supply truck with a loader appeared and a stack of necessary materials
was built up in front of the garage. By
now, any experienced homeowners will have figured out that this is all about
replacing our roof.
...and the old shingles start coming off.
Taylor
Adams, the founder and owner of Adams Roofing Company was on site to ensure
that the job was started as planned. He
referred to our home as a “50 square” and said that it would be a long day for
the crew but they should be able to complete the job before dark. It was a big crew too!
At one
point, the roofing crew discovered a old leak and some damage to the underlying
wood at the side of one of our dormers.
Necessary repairs were made without missing a beat.
In this
photo taken from our neighbor’s yard, all of the shingles have been removed
from the house itself and they were starting on the garage. Believe me, they filled up that dumpster!
Here the
protective covering designed to be underneath the new shingles has been laid on
the house and the crew was about to start removing the shingles on the garage. Ice guards were installed in the roof’s
valleys.
…and then
the garage was ready for the protective sheeting. This photo shows 2 of the crew members installing the protective covering on the backside of the garage. The crew was hardworking and very focused. Taylor Adams told us that they were all part of the same family!
I found
it interesting that the roofing crew didn’t leave the work site at lunch. Instead they hooked up 2 or 3 microwave ovens
to their generator and heated the food they brought with them.
Then the
pounding started as the crew installed the new “Driftwood” colored shingles on
the main part of the house. It was loud
but it was bearable…
When it
was the garage’s turn for the new shingles, I evacuated my ‘cave’, the bonus
room over the garage. The noise was necessary
but deafening!
As the
roofing project wound down, the crew put the final touches on the project. They installed the necessary flashings and
pipe boots. By the time everything was finished,
it was getting dark. Even so, they did a
decent job of cleaning up despite the ‘visual impairment’.
They had an
interesting tool for picking up stray roofing nails…a magnetized broom/rake-like
device. Even so, Laurie did make a
couple of clean up rounds in the light of day, picking up a few nails but
primarily small pieces of clear wrapping material.
These 2
photos show the finished product…a new roof that should outlive our stay in
this home. If you think that it looks
much like the original roof, you’d be right as Laurie selected the same
shingles for the job. The big difference
is that the moss and stains are gone and necessary repairs have been made. The house now looks like it did originally…
We
selected Adams Roofing Company 3 or 4 years before they actually replaced our
roof. First of all, they are highly
recommended by many residents in the Loudon Tennessee area. Second…it was all about honesty.
About 4
years ago, I became concerned that our roof, then with forest on 3 sides, was deteriorating
and probably needed to be replaced. Two
companies stopped by and agreed with my assessment and gave me their
prices. Then Jeff Adams, (Taylor’s son),
came by, and went up on the roof to check it out. He told me that I didn’t need a new roof yet
and that I had another 3 or 4 years before it needed to be replaced. On top of that good news, his price for a
replacement roof was lower than the other 2 companies…and 4 years later it was
still lower than the other company’s original bids. Honesty won the day!
If you
live in Loudon or nearby counties…they operate in about a 70 mile radius…check
out Adams Roofing. They will save you
money! Website: https://www.adamsroofingtenn.com/.
