Local - Mostly a Variety of Dining Choices

...Time for another short break from our road trip last October that took us through 7 different states.  The focus this time is on food...from 3 different restaurants, but also Laurie's new "phone friend" and a new neighbor.

Laurie and I are always looking for quality pizza, something that we have struggled to find here in East Tennessee. (Suggestions are welcome!) For us the best pizza in the area can be found at the Tellico Grains Bakery in Tellico Plains Tennessee. (Lunch Only - website: https://tellico-grains-bakery.com/)

But we've continued to search.  FYI, our definition of quality pizza includes the generous use of toppings, a distinctive red sauce and a firm but thin crust.  Of course, everyone has their favorite types of pizza... It's a personal preference.

So we recently had a pizza at a 'new to us' restaurant, Corner Pizza.  Apparently, it has been in business for a while.  Corner Pizza is located at the intersection of US Hwy 11 and US Hwy 70 at the northern edge of Loudon County.  We ordered out 'touchstone' pizza, the one we use to compare with others.  Italian Sausage and Pepperoni.  Corner Pizza's version was very nice indeed.  Our mistake was that we went with their standard crust, a bit too thick for our taste, but we failed to note that a thin crust pizza was available.  We shall return in the near future for another taste test!  Website: https://www.cornerpizzalenoircity.com/

Recently we returned to another restaurant that we've 'discovered', Sol Azteca, a Mexican Restaurant in Madisonville Tennessee that we really like.  We went with another couple and we tried a couple of entrees that we hadn't tried before.  Shown above is their Polo Coyoacan, grilled chicken breast topped with chorizo and shredded cheese.  It was accompanied by Mexican rice, refried beans with more cheese...and tortillas.  Both members our group that ordered this entree were very happy with their meals!

For my entree, I decided to go for the Burrito San Jose.  This large burrito was filled with pieces of pork and steak, then topped with chorizo and cheese.  As you can see, Mexican rice and refried beans were also included.  There was plenty of meat involved but I didn't think that that steak/beef and pork mixture was ideal.  Next time I order a burrito it will be all about the steak or perhaps, chicken.  FYI, I mixed the chorizo in with the beans and cheese...and it was a very tasty side dish!

Sol Azteca is now our 'go to' Mexican restaurant in the area...and we 10 or more choices within 15 miles of our home.  Sol Azteca is on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/solaztecamadisonville/

Now for a bit of cuisine from India.  I'd previously written about our positive experience at The Spice Hut in Lenoir City.  On this occasion we were accompanied by a couple that hadn't eaten there before, with the male half of the couple planning a photographic excursion to India.  He wanted to sample some Indian food so he would have some idea of what he might be eating on his trip.

One of our starters or appetizers was this order of Chili Cheese Naan.  Fresh bread/naan with fresh chili and cheese topped with butter and roasted in the clay oven. ($5.99) Everyone seemed to really like this version of naan, but I didn't think that it was very distinctive, more like a cheese pizza and I couldn't really detect any chili flavor.

Our second appetizer was an order of Punjabi Aloo Samosas.  Filled with a potato and peas stuffing, these flaky crust creations were served with a tangy tamarind and date sauce. ($4.99) Everyone really enjoyed these treats...with that sauce kicking them up a couple of notches.

I can't recall what this dish was called on the menu.  It is Tandoori Chicken with an assortment of vegetables.  While the diner who ordered this for dinner did enjoy it, she felt that the amount of chicken served was pretty skimpy.

Looking at the online menu, Tandoori chicken is nowhere to be found.  The menu is one of the shortcomings of this restaurant.  The online menu doesn't provide descriptions of the majority of offerings listed.  The menu provided at the restaurant provides zero descriptions of the dishes, but if you want to take the time and you have a smart phone, you can pull up some information on your phone.  This is definitely not customer friendly...and the servers are not very helpful in this regard.  When ordering, you are sort of on your own.  In the future, I'll just research 2 or 3 Indian dishes on line to determine what I want to order.

Our future traveler to India decided to order the Crispy Honey Chicken. ($16.99) This entree wasn't described on the menu.  However, as per an Indian's input on line, this is basically an Chinese style recipe with a sweet flavor and some mild spices...but the Indian version is spicier and has a bit of moderate heat.  Note the pickled vegetables.  This wouldn't be my choice but Bob has a much broader palate than I do and he did enjoy his meal.

Both Laurie and I went for entrees that we knew and really enjoy.  Her choice was the Butter Chicken, or murgh makhani. ($16.99) This Indian dish originated in Delhi India and it is a style of curry that is made with chicken and a spiced tomato and butter sauce.  As during our previous visits to The Spice Hut, Laurie was very happy with her dinner!

As is my habit in Indian restaurants, I ordered the Lamb Vindaloo. ($19.99) Basically it consists of chunks of lamb and potatoes with a spicy sauce.  It was excellent.  Note: All of these entrees come with a large bowl of what I think is basmati rice, in my case great for soaking up all that sauce with chunks of potato or lamb.

Diners at The Spice Hut are offered a level of spicy 'heat' with every entree.  The range goes from 1 to 10.  Laurie was happy with a 4 and I chose a 7, perfect for my taste.

Do not be deterred by my comments on the menu.  The Spice Hut does serve good food...but a little research is needed by diners unless they are familiar with Indian cuisine.  Also don't panic when you drive up to the restaurant...which shares a large space with a fireworks store, convenience store and gas station.  The restaurant is nicely separated from the rest of the businesses.

The Spice Hut is located at 1204 US Hwy 321 in Lenoir City Tennessee.  It's just west of Exit 81 off of I-75.  They are open daily for lunch and dinner.  Website: https://spicehutind.com/.

Moving on from all that food.  This photo shows Laurie with her new friend Zane at the Verizon store in the Turkey Creek Shopping Center.  Zane helped her with a major challenge...moving from her Samsung Smart Phone to an iPhone from Apple.  While she's still learning...and leaning on others to help her with the transition, Zane provided a lot of basic assistance.  For the first couple of days after the change, I just hid out for my own mental well-being.  Great progress has been achieved.

Introducing our new neighbor... This is Terry and she just moved into the new home that is located directly behind us in Loudon County.  She is a 'crafter' and a retired member of the US Military.  A common bond with us is that she's also a collector...of a variety of items she loves.  Much to my liking, she counts philately as one of her hobbies.  Welcome to the neighborhood Terry and thank you for your service to the USA!

Off to a Play and Dinner!

It was a beautiful Thursday afternoon in early September when we picked up our neighbors, Sue and Steve, and then headed west to Crossville Tennessee.  The drive is just a bit over an hour and we'd allowed plenty of time to reach our destination.  We were all looking forward to the day's activities...

Our initial goal for the afternoon was the Cumberland Country Playhouse.  I'm glad that I'd left plenty of time to get to the Theatre, park in an advantageous spot and pick up our tickets.  The timing was tighter than I'd expected as the most direct route to the Playhouse was closed for road repairs.  After trying to find our way with little success, kudos to the young lady in the ticket office who literally stayed on the phone with us and guided us through back streets to the theatre!  Upon arrival, we all relaxed...and Sue and Steve were more than ready to see the play.

As it turned out, Steve reciprocated photo-wise, capturing this picture of Laurie and yours truly...and I was almost smiling too!  By the way, my normal retirement daily attire includes shorts and a t-shirt, preferably a Carhartt.  However, in this case I dressed up!  I wore a collared golf shirt...but it too is a Carhartt.

By now I'm sure that you have figured out what play we going to see at Cumberland Playhouse... Laurie and I are partial to musicals and we've seen several at this theatre over the last 12 - 15 years.  "Grease" was scheduled for 19 shows and it was so popular that the management added 2 extra shows in order to meet demand.

About half of the performances of "Grease" are matinees.  Afternoon performances attract more groups (churches, clubs, retirement communities, etc.) and the crowds tend to be older.  The main theatre has 500 seats, and as expected, all of them had been sold out.  This indicates that roughly 10,000 patrons attended performances of "Grease".  Photos aren't allowed inside the theater itself...

We all agreed that the music was fine but the flow of the show seemed somehow contrived...didn't really work all that well.  Still, the play was quite enjoyable and the actors were very professional... Cumberland Playhouse featured or will feature 6 other plays on their mainstage in 2024.  They include "Finding Nemo Jr.", Dial M for Murder", "Live...in Living Color", "Anastasia", "Beautiful" (Carole King musical), and "White Christmas".  Other plays are offered in Cumberland Playhouse's Adventure Theater.  In addition several live music concerts are presented every year.

The Cumberland County Playhouse has been in operation since 1965 and over 5 million people have attended its many plays and shows.  To learn more, go to https://ccplayhouse.com/.

Crossville Tennessee is in the Central Time Zone and we live on the east side of the Cumberland Plateau in the Eastern Time Zone.  It was time for dinner when the play was over and, rather than wait and eat after 7:30 PM or so when we arrived back in our area, we decided to find a place to eat in Crossville.

Two restaurants were well rated on-line and both expected large parties after the play was over.  The Pour House Bistro said that they would be able to seat our group of 4 if we arrived promptly  after the play.  We had a great parking place at the theater and we made it to the restaurant with time to spare!  I will admit that the shabby front entrance to the restaurant did give me a moment of pause...

The Pour House Bistro was already fairly busy when we arrived...but the big group of 19 that they expected hadn't arrived yet.  I would describe the interior of the restaurant...the bar and the dining area...as country casual, which was just fine with us.

For an appetizer, Steve chose the Fried Pickle Fries served with a house-made ranch dressing. ($14.00) While Laurie and I have had plenty of fried pickles, they always been in chip form.  Laurie and agreed that this 'French fry' form was very good and it was easier to dip and eat.

Appetizer options at The Pour House Bistro were somewhat limited in comparison to other restaurants. The others listed are Fried Green Beans, Crispy Brussels Sprouts + Pork Belly and a Creamy Spinach Artichoke Dip.

For his dinner, Steve ordered the Carolina Smash Burger. ($15.00) The burger was topped with candied jalapenos, Carolina Gold BBQ sauce, bacon, cheddar cheese and fried onions.  Steve really enjoyed his burger and those crispy fried onions were a great topping.  He really liked the seasoned French fries too...

Sue went for a burger as well.  Hers was the Southern Scarlett Burger. ($15.50) Her burger was topped with a bourbon BBQ sauce, cheddar cheese, bacon and fried onions.  Instead of French fries, Sue's side was the house potato chips.

Other hand held creations available at The Pour House Bistro include a Vegetarian 'burger', pork sliders, a Cubano, a shrimp po' boy, a chicken caesar wrap and a seasonal wrap.

Laurie went in a different direction, ordering an item that we hadn't seen on another menu.  This was the Spicy Korean BBQ Steak Tacos. ($13.50) These tacos included steak, the spicy Korean BBQ sauce, Asian style coleslaw, cold pickled cucumbers and carrots.  Other proteins she could have chosen for her tacos were fish, pork, shrimp and mahi mahi.  Depending on the protein chosen, prices ranged from $12.50 to $17.50.

Laurie did enjoy her tacos...especially with all the textures and flavors that enhanced the dish.  The house-made chips were disappointing though.  I tried them myself and they lacked any real flavor and adding salt didn't help.

For me, the burgers were off the menu.  The Pour House only serves burgers medium well or well done.  If it isn't medium rare, its not on my personal menu.  So I wandered over to the restaurant's list of Signature dishes.  I ended up choosing Alexander's Chicken Gnocchi with gnocchi pasta, grilled chicken, sundried tomatoes, rep pepper flakes, and parmesan cream sauce, all topped with goat cheese. ($20.00) I really liked this dish and there was so much food that I ended up taking the leftovers home with me to serve as a breakfast entree...

The list of Signature entrees includes some creative options in addition to the sirloin steak, pork sliders, a Cubano, a chicken tender platter and other usual items.  These more creative items, (here in Tennessee), include Low Country Shrimp and Grits, Cajun Pasta, a Spicy Korean Rice Bowl with protein, white rice and a fried egg.  In addition, there is the Judah Buddha Sushi Bowl and a Coconut Shrimp Bowl.

The Pour House Bistro/Restaurant is located at 42 North Street in Crossville Tennessee.  Phone: 931-456-0066.  This restaurant is open for lunch and dinner from Tuesday through Saturday.  Website: https://www.thepourhousebistro.com/.

More Shopping and Browsing...Plus Taking a Break

...continuing with our visit from Laurie's sister Bonnie and her husband Bill.  It was all about spending time together, shopping/browsing and food.  We revisited places I'd written about previously but that we had liked or enjoyed as well as some new locations.

Roost, in downtown Maryville Tennessee, is one of those places that we've been to previously.  However this home decor store is definitely worthy of another visit and further blogsite coverage.

I am generally bored by most home decor and furniture stores but Roost is a definite exception.  But this relatively small store reeks style...in my opinion projecting a truly warm and very tasteful overall 'look'.  Fortunately for my wallet, our home is packed with furniture, wall decor, etc. that we've acquired over the years, so other than an occasional small item, Roost is a 'browsing' experience for us.  In addition, changing out our 'look' for the 'Roost look' would require wholesale change, something we aren't contemplating at this stage of our life.

FYI, Roost isn't just a store, the owner and staff provide interior design services.  Roost is located at 109 East Broadway Avenue in Maryville Tennessee.  Website: https://roosthome.com/.

There is an ongoing effort to improve downtown Maryville and to make it more of a destination for the area than it already is.  It is challenging because Broadway sits at the crest of a rather narrow hill and parking can be problematic.  Progress is being made but that colorful mural currently serves to distract from a building that needs to be reimagined with a new business.

The adjoining building with the white storefront at 106 East Broadway contains 2 businesses.  The ground floor is occupied by a bookstore named Neighborly Books while the upper level houses an Art Space Gallery for local artists.  The building was constructed in 1910.

This is the old Post Office/Federal Building at 201 East Broadway in Maryville.  It was built in 1916 and it served as the city's main post office from 1917 through 1962.  From 1962 through 1990 it served as a branch post office.  For many years it also served as offices for other Federal government functions.  The building was the first Headquarters of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park back in 1935.  Most recently, it was repurposed for dental services.

Our next stop was at the Tellico Village Yacht Club in Loudon County Tennessee.  Although it's close to our home, we haven't been here in some time.  FYI, it is a yacht club in name only.  There are docks for lease by Villagers, lots of boats and a gas pump, but not a yacht or any large watercraft in sight.  We knew that the views were great plus Bonnie and Bill had never been here...

Built in 1983, the Tellico Village Yacht Club features the Blue Heron Restaurant, meeting rooms and, as shown above, a bar.  The Yacht Club is the center of many Village activities and live entertainment is common especially during the summer.  It also frequently serves as a wedding venue, shutting down other services for a couple's special day.

Our objective was to imbibe in an adult beverage and enjoy a couple of appetizers while taking in the magnificent scenery along Tellico Lake.  We ordered House-Made Crab Rangoon Crispy fried wontons that were filled with lump crab meat, cream cheese and herbs, then served with sweet chili sauce. ($14.00) Everyone else seemed to enjoy them but I much prefer the version that many restaurants serve that doesn't include real crab meat.

Our second appetizer/mid-day snack was this order of Thai Chili Shrimp Eggrolls stuffed with shrimp and accented with sweet chili sauce...all wrapped in a thin pastry sheet before frying. ($14.00) I thought that it was OK but not great...not distinctive, but everyone else said that they liked them.

When it really right comes down to the main attraction at the Tellico Village Yacht Club, its all about the views.  This was what we saw from our table in the bar.  The views from the restaurant are even better as it is situated to the left of this photo and it sits closer to the lake with big windows on 3 sides.

The Yacht Club in Tellico Village is open to the public.  It's located at 202 Chota Road in Loudon Tennessee.  For more information about the Tellico Village Yacht Club and the Blue Heron Restaurant, including the menu, just go to https://www.tellicovillageyachtclub.com/.

Now to our changing neighborhood...

As I've mentioned before, the lot diagonally across the street from us is the site of a new house.  After the lot was graded and the foundation set, it was time to rough in the framework.  At the start of this particular day, there was no framework, only the foundation.  With the day not quite over, this was what the construction crew had accomplished.  A few of them were still working on the build after 5 PM.

On the next work day after the previous photo was taken, a crane showed up and the joists went up...then the outer wall board and about 80% of the roof was covered.  It stuns us both at just how fast this phase of a new build can progress...from foundation to this stage of construction in just two days!

That's all for now.  Just click on any of the photos to enlarge them...

Another Dining Experience - Another City

Recently we hit the road again.  This time it was all about visiting family members in St. Louis Missouri and Omaha Nebraska.  Lots of food and family time but no 'back-roading' or historic sites to explore.

On our first day, the goal was to drive from Loudon Tennessee to St. Louis, about an 8.5 hour drive with stops.  No luncheon photos...but as has become our practice, we stopped at the Freddy's Frozen Custard and Steakburgers location in Paducah Kentucky.  Excellent as usual but the restaurant was packed so the wait was longer than expected.

Our journey began on a Saturday.  We normally would have had dinner with Laurie's sister Bonnie and Bonnie's husband Bill but they were out of town at a wedding.  We'd asked them for dining recommendations close to our Hampton Inn which is adjacent to St. Louis' Forest Park and it's famous expansive and free zoo.  Drake's was new to us and it looked like a very casual venue on-line...perfect after a long day of driving.  Located in Maplewood Missouri, it was very convenient for us.

When we entered Drake's we noted the 'garage door' decor...popular with so many dining destinations these days...as well as the bright lights and multiple TV screens.  I do believe that bar decor designers now consider the backlighting of the booze to be a requirement...just to add color and drama.

Drake's in Richmond Heights Missouri is a big restaurant and it is apparently very popular...although it was Saturday...so a crowd would be expected.  We ordered adult beverages at the bar while we waited but we were seated fairly quickly.  For once being a party of 2 worked to our advantage.  Then problem was that apparently the waitstaff was confused as regards who was responsible for our table.  Once the confusion was solved, our service was very good.

So what to order?  Drake's menu is fairly large and diverse so study was required...

For my dinner I ordered the Southern Fried Chicken Sandwich with French fries. ($15.49) The sandwich came with lettuce, tomato and pickles with a Creole mayonnaise on a butter toasted bun.  It was very good and, as you can see it was huge!  The fries were OK but not special.  The only issue with the sandwich was that it was really messy to eat.  I ended up using a knife and fork on part of it.

I'd also been tempted by the Fried Bologna Sandwich but I'm glad I made the choice I did.  Laurie was a bit tempted by the Turkey, Swiss and Avocado Grill. Other options on the menu include a number of starters, dinner salads, chili, smashed burgers (including a vegan version), Steaks and related combos and a number of 'Favorites" including salmon, chicken and fish tacos plus beer battered cod.

The biggest surprise on the menu was the Asian flair portion of the offerings... It includes Sushi, Tempura Shrimp, Dumplings, Nigiri (including eel and flying fish eggs) and a selection of sashimi.  This part of the menu is why I chose Drake's in the first place.  Laurie loves sushi and sashimi and the menu also included a variety of items that I tend to favor...hence my sandwich.

Laurie ordered a Half Aqua Sushi Platter. ($27.99) I suspected that the platter would be large and the waitress didn't really describe it fully.  With 8 California Rolls, 8 Tempura Shrimp Rolls and 8 Tuna Spring Rolls, Laurie's mind was blown.  At a little more than a dollar each, this would be a good buy for 2 people for dinner or for a group as a starter.

In any case, given Laurie's current diminished appetite, there was no way she could finish this huge platter of food.  I will give her credit as she did put a good dent in the offering.  I skipped half of my sandwich bun and almost all of my OK French fries to help with this massive platter.  Even with my help, we couldn't consume all of the food that was presented.  FYI, it was very good but I've had enough sushi to last me for a while...

This Drake's location is found at 8135 Dale Avenue in Richmond Heights Missouri.  When I looked up the restaurant I discovered that there is a Drake's location in Knoxville...less than 30 miles from our house.  We'll be checking it out soon.  Website: https://drakescomeplay.com/.

Drakes is part of the Bluegrass Hospitality Group LLC based in Lexington Kentucky.  Some of the best food we've had in the last couple of years was at this company's OBC Kitchen in Lexington.

Our First Chinese Buffet in Many Years

We haven’t eaten in a Chinese restaurant that features a buffet in many years…  Covid really hammered the buffet industry and Laurie has never really been a ‘buffet fan’ although she has made an exception or two in recent years at my behest.  The meds she’s on have also shrunk her appetite.  Despite these facts, we do have a list of restaurants to try or try again and a Chinese buffet style restaurant was on the list.

We invited our friends Sue and Steve to join us on this dining ‘adventure’.  Sue pet sits for neighbors and Laurie was recently able to get her ‘dog fix’ with Tango, one of Sue’s ‘clients’.  Both of us carry milk bones in our pockets when we go out into the front yard or to the mail box.  Some neighborhood dogs just won’t budge until they get their treats if they see us!

This is the China King Buffet and Grill in Lenoir City Tennessee.  It’s located at the end of a shopping area that includes Home Depot, Walmart and a plethora of smaller shops.  The outside of the restaurant, especially the sign, could use a ‘refresh’.  Apparently the “Grill” portion of the sign was added or replaced as compared to the faded “China King Buffet” portion.

We had previously eaten at China King Buffet…about 14 years ago.  Our memories aren't what they used to be but we didn’t remember the décor being this eye-catching or the food being above the ordinary.  We remembered a plain and simple dining area, but perhaps we were mistaken.  In any case, the look of the dining area was promising…and the restaurant was really busy!

Once seated it was all about the quality of the food and the selection available.  The choices were pretty much overwhelming.  There was a salad related serving counter or bar, two ‘hot tables’ loaded with a variety of dishes and a dessert bar/counter too…

Selections from the ‘hot tables’ included 2 types of rice, noodles, a couple of soups and appetizers such as fried cream cheese wontons, chicken wings and boneless spare ribs.  Sue really enjoyed the ribs and Laurie thought that the wontons were very nice indeed.

In addition to the buffet tables as shown above, there is a nice selection of sushi too.  Laurie had 2 – 3 pieces of sushi with her buffet selections and she thought that it was fresh and quite nice...she loves sushi.  The menu lists 25 varieties of sushi…

The grill master will also stir up a selection of items that you select with the veggies and protein that you’d like to have.

The menu for China King Buffet reads “Sushi and Grill” as well as “Chinese, American and Japanese Cuisine”.  By way of example, one option that is e a kid favorite was good old mac ‘n cheese.  China King’s menu is broad enough to satisfy the variety of limited taste preferences that are the norm for many children and some adults.

I didn’t take a photo of everyone’s selections from the buffet.  This was my second plate from the ‘hot tables’.  This time I had bourbon chicken, orange beef, black pepper chicken, 2 varieties of rice, and a spring roll.

Protein offerings include shrimp…a couple different varieties, fried fish, calamari, pork, beef, and of course, chicken.  I had the coconut shrimp and it was OK but it was very popular.  Hibachi and Mongolian Combinations include 11 different combinations with spicy versions available too.

It was a bit of overkill but we didn’t skip dessert.  The banana pudding was credible and the other dessert choices were OK…but dessert wasn’t our reason for eating at China King.  China King’s actual menu is huge, offering Combination Platters and Specialties, plus soups, Egg Foo Young, Chow Mein, fried rice and even a number of Chef’s “Lite” Dishes.  FYI, China King does offer ‘adult beverages’.

Service was efficient with plates being promptly removed when finished.  Our server/attendant was very helpful in explaining just what was included in the buffet.  It was a weekend day when we stopped for dinner.  I prefer eating at buffets on weekends as there are more diners and the food turns over and is regularly refreshed…not much down time with your options just sitting there…

All 4 of us really enjoyed our meals.  It’s nice being able to sample food items and decide which ones appeal to your taste.  Despite a couple of trips to the food tables, no one felt ‘overstuffed’…probably due to a relatively low carb load.  Note: This isn’t gourmet Chinese cooking but it is a buffet that offers good food at a reasonable price.  With taxes and tip, the bill for Laurie and I came to $44.00.

China King Buffet and Grill is open for lunch and dinner 7 days a week.  You can order from the menu and they do a lot of take-out business.  This restaurant is located at 925 US Hwy 321 North in Lenoir City Tennessee.  It is in close proximity to an I-75 interchange so it’s handy for travelers.  Phone: 865-988-5988.  Website: Home | China King Buffet (tnchinakingbuffet.com).

On the way home we drove south down US Hwy 11.  Laurie wanted to have a look at this little church in the woods at 917 Pond Road on a hill just off the highway.  It is an attractive church in a great setting, that’s for sure.  This is the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection in Loudon Tennessee.  I couldn’t find any history about this church building.  Website: Resurrection Homepage - Church of the Resurrection (episcopalloudon.com).

That’s all for now.  Just click on any of the photos to enlarge them…
