Steamers Clam Bar and Grill - Cedar Key Florida

As I’ve mentioned in previous postings, when we visited Cedar Key in early September, our dining options were somewhat limited.  We were told that because the summer season was over and the temperatures were still high, some of the local establishments take a vacation break at this time…

A true story or not…we only visited a couple of full-fledged restaurants during our short stay.

This is Steamers Clam Bar and Grill, which is located on the second level of this building on Dock Street in Cedar Key’s ‘new’ downtown area along the waterfront.

Steamers is expansive on the inside with nautical theme, a big bar and lots of seating.  We sat along the windows facing the water, (the top photo), but the other side has a view of Cedar Key’s little inner harbor where the tour boats pick up their passengers. 

We visited Steamers a couple of times, focusing on the appetizers and some adult beverages.  This was our order of Fried Calamari. ($7.99) It was pretty good but I thought that the quantity was a little skimpy.  I would have paid a little more for a larger order…

The Garlic Parmesan French Fries were good if not great… There were plenty of fries at $3.99. 

Laurie indulged in a vodka and tonic tall with 2 limes ($4.50) and I ordered a draft Miller Lite. ($2.50)

I love Fried Clams and Steamers’ version was very good! ($7.99) They were nice and fresh as they should have been giving the fact that the Cedar Keys are a major source of clam production in the USA.

Laurie prefers her clams ‘dressed up’.  This was her order of Clams Casino which she enjoyed very much. ($7.99) 

Other interesting appetizers included Lobster Mac and Cheese ($9.99);   Fish Dip ($6.99), a blend of Mahi Mahi, amberjack, and mullet and; a Clam Bowl ($7.99) with a pound of fresh local Cedar Key clams steamed in white wine and garlic. 

On yet another occasion, Laurie suggested that we pick up an order of Steamers Hot Chip Basket ($5.99) with thin cut homemade potato chips and a cheesy dipping sauce…and take them back to the condo.  She paired them with a nice Chardonnay for both of us and I used some Tabasco to give the nice cheese sauce a bit of an extra kick.   

Nothing against the restaurant’s ambiance, but the deck at our condo was a far superior place to relax and enjoy the view!
