Fat Edd’s – Metropolis Illinois

Wishing everyone a terrific 4th of July!  As we celebrate our independence, we must remember those who've given all to preserve our freedom...

This photo was from December and these are family members and myself holding my dad's burial flag from WWII in France...

On to my current posting... Its about a place about as American as it can be!

Since I’d decided to make a slight detour off of I-24 to check out Metropolis Illinois on our way to Omaha Nebraska, I also did a little research in order to determine the best place in town to have lunch…

Fat Edd’s Roadhouse had popped right up on Trip Advisor!  It was listed as the #1 restaurant in the area out of 24 possibilities.  They had 157 Excellent/Very Good reviews vs. only 7 poor or terrible…well within my ideal 10:1 positive vs. negative ratio.

Usually I can find some information on line regarding when a restaurant was founded, why it was given its name, etc.  In this case, although Fat Edd’s has a website, it doesn’t provide any background information…

Note:

·       Fat Edd’s is within walking distance from the Metropolis Illinois Harrah’s Casino which is just down the street to the left. Website: https://www.caesars.com/harrahs-metropolis

Fat Edd’s Roadhouse looks like a cross between an old fashioned roadhouse, a bar and a family gathering place.  The décor is basic with flat screen TVs, a tin ceiling, a big room in the back and a few slot machines back at the rear of this photo.

Customers can order on-line but this is the menu for the locals and tourists who just drop in for lunch or dinner.  Fat Edd’s claim to fame is based on their Peel ‘n Eat Shrimp and their half pound hamburgers although there are plenty of other offerings for their customers…

Orders are placed at the counter and customers are given a number.  When your number is called, you go up to the counter and pick up your meal…

We love Buffalo Chicken Dip so we decided to order it as our side with our burgers… ($6.99) Fat Edd’s version came with nacho corn chips.

We were both disappointed with this version of Buffalo Chicken Dip.  There wasn’t much ‘Buffalo’ flavor going on and it was just plain bland.  I even felt that the chicken tasted like it might have come from a can…but maybe that was just my disappointed taste buds talking up!  Even Tabasco couldn’t rescue this appetizer…

OK…Fat Edd’s Roadhouse is ‘known’ for its burgers and their peel and eat shrimp.  We didn’t feel like messing with the shrimp and given my proclivity for wearing my food on my shirt, I’m sure that Laurie appreciated my decision to order a half pound Bacon Cheddar Burger vs. the 'sure to wear' shrimp!

I ordered my burger with pickles and mayonnaise and I asked for it to be cooked medium rare. ( I was informed that at the end of the counter there is the condiment bar where you can help yourself to pickles, onions, etc. Nice touch.) My burger was a touch over cooked but it was still very juicy, the quality of the beef was a plus, I could actually taste the bacon, the pickles were nice and the bun was grilled.  It was a very good burger!

Laurie ordered the same thing that I did with a few onions on the side.  She really liked her burger too!  Again, it was a bit overcooked for our liking.  Nevertheless, we would both recommend the burgers at Fat Edd’s Roadhouse!

Perhaps the next time I’ll build up my nerve and try the peel ‘n eat shrimp… They were selling them right and left during our visit.  Fat Edd’s Roadhouse is located at 323 Ferry Street in Metropolis Illinois.  Phone: 618-524-5525.  Website: http://www.fateddsroadhouse.com/.

Thanks for stopping by for lunch!
